What Is IMEI?

IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. It is a unique 15 to 17-digit number that identifies each mobile phone. One can find it by dialing *#06# on the phone or looking it up in the device settings. The IMEI number is used to identify and distinguish individual mobile phones from one another and to identify their network operators. IMEI aids in enabling Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication.

Significance of IMEI

The IMEI number acts as a stringent security measure. It has significant benefits, including:

  1. Tracking lost or stolen phones using IMEI – The IMEI number is used to identify and locate the mobile phone and, in some cases, block specific phone functions.
  1. Preventing fraud – IMEI numbers are used to prevent fraud by identifying stolen phones and blocking them from being used.
  1. Providing information about a device’s manufacturer and model – IMEI numbers are used to establish the legitimacy and security of a device.

How IMEI Works

The IMEI number is hard-coded into a device. Hence, it is not possible to get rid of it. Therefore, if a phone is stolen or misplaced, the mobile carrier will black list the IMEI code. Furthermore, the device will also be locked out of network. So, the mobile phone will become useless.

Use Cases of IMEI

If you’re planning on purchasing a phone, you must check the validity of the phone. To do so, you can verify the IMEI number. By doing so, you will know the country and network in which the device was manufactured. Simultaneously, you will also learn about the device’s carrier information and warranty.
