What is Shipment?
E-commerce shipment refers to the shipping process of shipping goods from one point to another. It involves all services necessary to transport items purchased online from the retailer to the customer’s doorstep.
Significance of Shipment in E-commerce
The fast and safe shipment of goods is a crucial aspect of an e-commerce company’s growth. Customers tend to buy more products if they get their orders safely. Some added advantages of shipment include:
- Improves standard and reputation: The shipping process is responsible for creating a first impression of the brand. A large part of the customer’s shopping experience is related to e-commerce shipping and delivery services. Package delivered before or on time safely and accurately improves customer experience and loyalty.
How Shipment Works and Its Prerequisites
For e-commerce, the entire process of shipment starts from receiving an order to preparing it for final delivery. The three primary stages of a shipment process are as follows:-
- Order receiving: Ensure that the ordered products are in stock to fulfill the order
- Order processing: This is the main shipment stage. You will need to confirm the order data and ensure every detail is accurate. Thereafter, the order is shipped to the destination assigned. It can be to the customer or a port.
Use Case With Shipment
Let us take the example of a customer placing an order for two items from an online store. The order is first received by the company that checks for necessary details like address, name, contact information, and the like and further sent to the fulfillment center or the warehouse. The items are then picked, packed, labeled, and finally shipped out to the respective address.
