What Are International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code?

International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code was created for the maritime transport of hazardous materials in packaged form. It improves and unifies the safe transportation of dangerous goods.

The IMDG Code outlines certain requirements like container traffic, packaging, and others that companies need with regard to each distinct substance, material, or item.

Significance of IMDG Code in E-commerce Logistics

The main objective of the IMDG code is to safely transport dangerous goods while enjoying unrestricted transport of such items. It helps e-commerce companies in the following ways:

  • Having the IMDG code helps shippers comply with the regulations associated with the transportation of dangerous goods.
  • International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code makes the transport of hazardous goods user-friendly. It asks crew members to take proper training and handle dangerous goods with the utmost care. This protects crew members and prevents marine pollution.

How IMDG Code Works

IMDG Code is issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Every consignor dealing with the shipping of hazardous goods should have IMDG certification to ship such items. They also have to update the IMDG code every two years.

IMO guidelines require all crew members involved directly in dangerous cargo carried on board a ship to undergo a dangerous/hazardous goods course. This is based on IMO guidelines and STCW requirements.

To handle IMDG cargo on a ship, several shore-based training centers offer dangerous goods training. Comprehensive knowledge helps in avoiding complications and ensuring the safety of both the cargo and the ones associated with it.

Use Case With IMDG Code

For instance, consider a company that deals with nail polishes. As it contains some chemicals, nail polishes are considered hazardous items. So, to transport nail polish orders, companies need to apply for the IMDG code. It will help them safely transport nail polish internationally without contaminating the environment.
