CBM to KG Is Not a Unit Conversion

Metres cubed measure space. Kilograms measure mass. Nothing converts one into the other without a third number, and that third number is density.

Volume has no weight

A cubic metre of down jackets and a cubic metre of ceramic tiles occupy identical space and weigh nothing like each other.

Density is the bridge

Density is weight divided by volume, in kg per CBM. Once you know it, CBM and kg convert cleanly in both directions.

Carriers substitute a factor

Instead of measuring your density, a carrier applies an assumed one such as 167 kg per CBM. That is volumetric weight.

If you search this question you will find converters that answer with 1000 kg per CBM. That is the density of fresh water and it has nothing to do with your cargo.

Freight paperwork usually rounds 35.3146667 to 35.315 or 35.31. On a 40 ft³ figure that rounding shifts the CBM result by less than 0.0002, but it compounds on large volumes.

Three different tons

A metric tonne is 1000 kg, a US short ton is 907.18 kg, and a UK long ton is 1016.05 kg. A quote that just says "ton" is ambiguous, so ask which one before you compare prices.

What the numbers say

The crate is denser than the air freight assumption but far denser than one tonne per CBM, so air bills on actual weight while sea bills on volume.

Where 167 kg and the Revenue Tonne Come From

Both are widely used industry conventions rather than universal rules. Your carrier or forwarder contract is what actually decides.

167 kg per CBM

1,000,000 cm³ divided by a 6000 divisor gives 166.67 kg, commonly rounded up to 167 in air freight quoting.

200 kg per CBM

The same arithmetic with a 5000 divisor. Common on express and courier rate cards, and it produces a higher charge.

Revenue tonne on LCL

Sea LCL is commonly billed on whichever is greater, CBM or metric tonnes. It is often written on quotes as W/M.

How to Find Your Own Density Instead of Guessing

Your real density beats any convention: it tells you in advance which billing basis wins on each lane.

Measure the packed carton

Use outside dimensions of the sealed, palletised carton, including packaging and any overhang.

Weigh the same carton

Gross weight on a calibrated scale, with the pallet if the pallet ships with it.

Divide weight by volume

Kilograms divided by CBM gives density in kg per CBM. Panel four above does this for you.

Compare against the divisor

Density above the carrier factor means you bill on actual weight. Below it means volume drives the charge.

Record it per SKU

Density rarely changes for a given SKU and carton spec, so store it once and reuse it on every quote.

Recheck after packaging changes

A new box size or a change of void fill moves the density and can flip which basis you bill on.

The one number worth knowing

If your density sits close to the carrier factor, small packaging changes flip your shipment between weight-billed and volume-billed. That is where packaging redesign pays for itself.

CBM to KG Converter Questions

Not directly. CBM is a unit of volume and a kilogram is a unit of mass, so the two only connect through density, which is weight divided by volume. In freight the phrase usually means one of two things: volumetric weight, where you multiply CBM by a carrier factor such as 167 or 200 kg per CBM, or actual density, where you divide the real shipment weight by its CBM. Both are on this page and they give different numbers for the same shipment.
It comes from the volumetric divisor of 6000 that is widely used in air freight. One cubic metre is 1,000,000 cubic centimetres, and 1,000,000 divided by 6000 is 166.67, rounded to 167 kg per CBM in day-to-day quoting. It is a billing convention, not a physical fact. Carriers using a divisor of 5000 work to 200 kg per CBM instead, so check the divisor on the rate card.
That depends entirely on the density of the goods, so there is no single answer. If you are asking about volumetric weight at the common air freight factor of 167 kg per CBM, then 1000 kg corresponds to about 5.99 CBM. At 200 kg per CBM it corresponds to 5 CBM. If you know your real shipment volume, divide 1000 kg by that figure to get your actual density.
There is no fixed answer, because it depends on what the kilogram is made of. A kilogram of feathers occupies far more space than a kilogram of steel. Using the air freight convention of 167 kg per CBM, one kilogram maps to roughly 0.006 CBM, and at 200 kg per CBM it maps to 0.005 CBM. One cubic metre equals 35.3146667 cubic feet. The factor is exact rather than approximate, because one international foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 metres, so one cubic foot is exactly 0.028316846592 cubic metres. Most freight paperwork rounds it to 35.315 or 35.31, which is close enough for quoting but drifts on very large volumes.
Multiply the cubic feet figure by 0.028316846592, or divide it by 35.3146667. For example, 100 cubic feet is 2.8316847 CBM, and 500 cubic feet is 14.158423 CBM. If you only have carton dimensions in feet or inches, convert each dimension first, then multiply length by width by height.
Multiply kilograms by 2.20462262 to get pounds, or multiply pounds by 0.45359237 to get kilograms. The factor is exact by international agreement, so any rounding error comes from where you truncate. For a 210 kg crate the result is 462.97 lb. Round only on the final line of the quote.
A metric tonne is exactly 1000 kg, which is 2204.62262 lb. It is not the same as a US short ton, which is 2000 lb or 907.18474 kg, and it is not the same as a UK long ton, which is 2240 lb or 1016.0469 kg. A metric tonne is about 10.2 percent heavier than a short ton, so mixing the two on a quote is an expensive mistake.
No. The widely used LCL convention is that you are billed on whichever is greater, the shipment volume in CBM or the shipment weight in metric tonnes, sometimes written as W/M or weight or measure. That means a dense shipment can bill on tonnes and a light bulky shipment can bill on CBM. Some forwarders apply a different ratio or a minimum charge, so the booking confirmation decides.
