What is Routing?

Routing is a scheduling process to identify the most optimal and cost-effective way to transport a product from one location to another. It is used in delivery schedules or within large warehouses, where several products are managed simultaneously. 

Significance of Routing in an E-commerce Shipping and Delivery

Routing is used to map out the fastest and the most cost-effective route, which allows e-commerce brands and shipping companies to decrease the transit time and save some shipping budget. 

  • Faster transit time: The routing method allows companies to opt for the shortest way possible to deliver goods providing faster transit time.  
  • Lower costs: By opting for a suitable route, companies can save money invested in shipping. 

Prerequisites of Routing and How It Works

A well-synchronized application that captures and provides real-time traffic and weather updates is one of the primary requirements for routing. Several routing software available can be integrated through an API with Google maps, Apple maps, or any other third-party software of a similar category.

  • Once the routing software is integrated, the brand enters the product’s destination and origin. 
  • Based on the real-time information, an optimal route is suggested. 
  • It is followed up by product disbursal and consequent delivery. 

Use Case with Routing 

A Nakhon Ratchasima-based e-commerce brand received an order for a pair of sandals, with Kalasin being its destination. Through routing, the company identified a route with Khon Khaein as a mid-stoppage. However, based on the real-time traffic updates, the selected route showed the highest delay. Therefore, another route that added stops like Surin and Roi Ek was chosen due to minimal traffic. Subsequently, the product was delivered ahead of the mentioned date.
