What is a Pick to Light in E-commerce?

Pick to light is an order-picking technology used in e-commerce warehouses and distribution centers. It utilizes light and LEDs to indicate pick locations and for a faster, more accurate, and less labor-intensive order-picking process. The system also allows for real-time inventory tracking, improved order accuracy, and greater efficiency in order picking.

Significance of Pick to Light in E-commerce Warehouses

Pick to light system eliminates the need for paper-based order picking, which can cause errors, delays, and additional labor costs. Here are some added advantages of pick to light technique:

  • This technology helps to improve accuracy, reduce labor costs, and increase efficiency by automating the picking process. By providing workers with real-time feedback on picking, pick to light ensures that picking errors are avoided and order accuracy is maintained.
  • It also increases the speed of picking, as workers can quickly learn and follow the order of the lights to pick the right items.
  • Pick to light is cost-effective, as it does not require expensive infrastructure or costly materials. Additionally, the lights are highly visible and easy to understand, making it easier for workers to learn the process quickly.
  • This technology provides warehouse managers with detailed data about order fulfillment, allowing them to identify inefficient processes and make improvements.

Prerequisites to Calculate Pick to Light and How It Works

The prerequisites are as follows:

1. Understanding the number of items and where they are located in the warehouse, their size and weight, and any other factors that could affect the picking speed.

2. Analysis of the current picking process,  including tracking the number of times an item is picked, the time it takes to pick each item, and any other factors that could affect the picking speed.

3. Understanding of the pick to light system wherein you have to understand the system components, the hardware and software involved, and the setup and installation process.

4. Access to the warehouse and understanding the layout of the warehouse, the location of the items, and any other factors that could affect the speed of picking.

5. Data collection. This includes tracking the number of times an item is picked, the time it takes to pick each item, and any other factors that could affect the speed of picking.

Use Case With Pick to Light

Suppose a company plans to install a pick to light system in its warehouse. Now, whenever the picking order is activated, the pick to light compartment will display the light. The indicator will signal the display position from a distance with removal quantity. The picker will then confirm the removal with an acknowledgment button. There is no room for error, and it saves time to fulfill picking orders.
